Information on Burn Injuries

Burns are injuries to flesh or skin caused by any type of heat. Electricity, chemicals, radiation and even friction can cause burns as well as fires. Most burns cause the damage to the superficial layers of skin, but some extremely severe burns can cause injury internally as well. The treatment of burns has improved immensely over the years but the damage done to the appearance of the victim is something that can often times can never be recovered from. Furthermore, the emotional scars of enduring the immense amount of pain that is associated with burn injuries is enough to haunt a victim for the rest of their lives.

Burn injuries can be sustained in most types of accidents that involve excessive thermal, chemical or electrical exposure. Car accidents, construction accidents and dangerous products can involve burn injuries to victims of another person's negligence.

Types of Burn Injuries

As mentioned before, burns are conventionally thought to do damage to the surface of one's skin. However, serious burn injuries can do significant damage internally as well as externally.

In the medical field, severity of the burn is categories in terms of "degrees":

  • First Degree: The least severe out of all burn injuries, first degree burns are limited to superficial damage to the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of skin. The symptoms are usually pain mixed with a heated sensation. Skin may become red but does not usually blister. First degree burns are burn injuries such as sunburns or mild steam burns.
  • Second Degree: Like the first degree burns, second degree burns damage the epidermis but extend a little bit deeper into the papillary dermis. Second degree burns can be mild or severe depending on how deep the damage is to the superficial skin. The appearance is red, yellow or white with blisters and the sensation is considered very painful. Local infections, scarring and in serious cases even skin grafting may be involved with the recover from second degree burns.
  • Third Degree: These burns extend through the entire thickness of the skin. The appearance is usually white or brown and the texture is stiff and leathery. Complications in recovery may lead to the need of skin grafting or even amputation.
  • Fourth Degree: Fourth degree burns are the most severe burn injuries, effecting not only the entire layer of skin but also causing severe damage to under lying muscle, nerve and bone. The injuries often involve amputation of the damaged limb, functional impairment and even death.

Negligence and Burn Injuries

When one person's negligence leads to an accident involving excessive thermal or electrical exposure, victims of that carelessness can suffer serious and even fatal burn injuries. Recovery from serious burn injuries requires extensive and specialized medical attention and disfigurement can result, warranting even more attention by a plastic surgery specialist.
