Why You Shouldn’t Drive in These Truck Driver Blind Spots

Why You Shouldn’t Drive in These Truck Driver Blind Spots

Sharing the road with large trucks can be dangerous, While truck drivers should be driving with the extra care that their job requires, it doesn’t always happen. Because of this, it’s extremely important for other drivers on the road to take extra precautions to avoid the risk of a truck collision.

“No Zone” Areas

Because trucks are typically much larger than normal vehicles, truck drivers inherently have more and larger blind spots on all four sides. These blind spots, also known as “no zone” areas are located:

  • About 20 feet in front of the truck
  • About 30 feet behind the truck
  • One lane wide on the truck driver’s side, extending back to about half the length of the trailer
  • Two lanes wide on the passenger side, extending back slightly behind the trailer

Passing a Big Truck

The best way to stay out of blind spots is to pass big trucks whenever possible. Here are a few tips to help do this safely:

  • Speed up slightly to get in front of large trucks
  • When driving behind a big truck, put more room in between your vehicles
  • Stay out of blind spots when a truck is turning, backing up, or changing lanes
  • Move ahead or slow down so the truck driver can see you in the side mirrors

Unfortunately, even the most defensive and vigilant drivers can sustain injuries in truck accidents caused by negligent truck drivers or trucking companies.
