LATLC Remodels Home After Unlicensed Contractor Steals Thousands

LATLC Remodels Home After Unlicensed Contractor Steals Thousands

A story of construction fraud ends as a story of goodwill and community support after Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities (LATLC) stepped in to help.

A pastor and his wife sought the assistance of a contractor to make their home wheelchair-accessible while the pastor was recovering from a stroke. While he was in the hospital, the unlicensed contractor collected approximately $16,000 from the couple and left their home in shambles.

KCBS News of Los Angeles interviewed the pastor’s wife and featured an investigation of the story. During the interview, the woman was wearing an LATLC t-shirt — the charity has worked with the pastor’s church in the past and helped with initiatives around the holidays.

When news of the couple’s struggles broke, LATLC stepped in. The organization completely remodeled the home, complete with wheelchair-accessible features so the pastor could come home from the hospital. The couple filed a complaint with the California Contractors State License Board and is hoping the unlicensed contractor will “pay it forward” using the money he stole from them.
