A dozen people were hurt in an auto accident involving a stretch limo on the night of August 1 on Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia. The limo was full of young women coming home from a day-long bachelorette party, including Suzette Martinez, the bride-to-be, who is now in critical condition.
According The Santa Clarita Valley Signal, authorities believe that the limo failed to come to a safe stop at a red light, rear ending one vehicle and causing it to strike another car. In total, the accident has put three individuals in critical condition. Martinez, who is suffering from broken ribs and a punctured lung, was traveling in the front to the limo when the impact occurred.
"She was actually at the front of the limo and she took the brunt of it all," Martha Garcia, one of Martinez's bridesmaids, told reporters. "We spent the day wine-tasting, and we were on our way to a house in Saugus. We were 10 minutes from our house."
Family Support During a Trying Time
Martinez was scheduled to marry Shane Valladares on August 8. According to family members and friends who have rallied to Martinez's side, Valladares has rarely left his fiance's hospital room since the accident. They are currently discussing whether or not to postpone their ceremony.
Not only is this accident a reminder of the ripple effect unexpected injuries can have for families and loved ones, but also the dangers that limousines and other specialty vehicles on the road can pose. While limos are associated with celebratory times in our lives, they are also common carrier vehicles that owe a standard of safety to passengers. While it is unclear if negligence played a role in this case, wrongdoing by limo operators and companies can and should be held accountable in a court of law.
